福華街 - 舊式路牌 an old and hidden street sign of fuk wa street

walking and touring is definitely one good way to explore hong kong, not only for tourist but highly recommend to every hongkongers. lately i discover a ‘new’ route on the kowloon side. i stil cannot get enough of canton road, shanghai street and streets around shum shui po, but i started on another major road actually crossing kowloon to the new territories (in the sense of old hong kong) few weeks ago. It is castle peak road.

one difference between this road and nathan road or shanghai street is that the former is not a straight road, it has a major turn that kind of separate the residential and industrial sides of the road.

this road has two sections with two different chinese names, one named as a standard road, is the section on kowloon; while another is named highway that runs in the new territories; the english name however stick with the original one.

this photo is taken along the standard road, in the residential area.

i understood that people living or using this space must not be very comfortable with the torn and broken condition of the building. but being a spectator a passerby, i cannot help appreciating: the beautiful curve of the corner of this walk-up building; the space/design tucking in at the ground level; the iron window frame and the old big rectangular-shaped windows. the bonus is the old street sign being “camouflaged’. it probably was being painted over during a recent building renovation project.

take a careful look. the road sign is in t shape with double border. name in english on top, chinese underneath. note that the chinese read from right to left, in opposite direction of the english. this sign could be dated back to 1950s or before.
