alhambra building is the big commercial-residential block on nathan road where temple street is at its back, definitely a landmark around that area.
before alhambra building there was alhambra theatre. according to a cinema website, it was the first luxurious theatre being built on the kowloon peninsula. it could compare to the queen’s theatre on the hong kong side. the opening date was 1st February, 1934. the cinema was later renamed to ping on theatre, thus the chinese name of this building in also following. it was built in 1958.
if you are familiar with this blog, you know that i love signages, characters and fonts. so instead of showing you the building, here is the collection of signage of businesses operate inside the building. it is on top of the entrance facing kansu street. from top to bottom there are stamps collection, fruit & wine, cha chaan tien (local style-cafe), alhambra building, bone-settling doctor, then the cha chaan tien again.
note a sign carries a number starts with 3-, that is an outdated telephone number. a seven digit number starts with 3 means phone on kowloon side.
