長沙灣轉角舊樓 corner tong lau at cheung sha wan

older residents regard themselves living in shum shui po, rather than the political constituency correct or the mtr-era definition of “cheung sha wan”.

this neighbourhood indeed blows the same good old hong kong vibe; grass root, warm and independent (fewer chain stores).

look at these street corners. the walk-up buildings on both sides resonate the beauty of hong kong old architecture wisdom and rhythm. closer to us is a old-style chinese restaurant specialize in roasts. it has been standing here for decades. recent renovation highlights the almost elegance of the facade and street level veranda, but, to me, some sense of rawness and casualness of tong lau is lost. regardless, i am grateful standing at this corner few days ago, appreciating some old assets of this city are still existing, when my mind can’t help flew to wan chai the same second mourning a little the dying of tung tuk pawn shop.
