大丸附近的洋樓 the former daimaru neighbourhood

2015.7.7 | 京士頓街、百德新街 paterson street crosses kingston street, causeway bay

這個街區 - 從前大丸和百德新街一帶 - 的大廈有一種氣派和性格。建築穩正而優雅,每個單位都享有真正通風空間大的露台(而不是新式迷你單位「御賜」的鞋盒那種)。有趣的是,大丸走了,食街沒了,地面的商舖轉過又變;她們頭頂的洋樓卻沒有特別人臉黃花。

這一帶的洋樓大概五十年歷史,建於「豪宅」還沒面世的年代。但他們在我心目中絕對是富裕之家,不單因為樓價,而是那寬敞的露台。每次經過這兒,不禁瀏覽這些空中美麗空間(沒有密封起來的),有些還保留好像是原建的鐵圍欄,偶爾有一家兩家,放種著盆栽,讓空氣綠悠揚。

hong kong is ever-changing, 99.9% of the time. but the mansions around this block or two seem having great defensive power against this trend. the legendary daimaru department store closed down in the late 1990s; developer created a ‘food street’ around paterson street and that is gone too. but a number of residential buildings along this stretch have been standing tall (well, around 10 storeys) for five decades. nowadays hong kong is overflooded with “luxurious residential” projects, but to me, these solid, elegant and spacious buildings, each with dignified balconies are truly grand and stylish living spaces.
