tsim sha tsui east (tst east) is still busy with tourist and office and hospitality service workers these days. but its golden era has certainly past. its prime started in the 80s last century. it was a ‘new’ area sprung with high-class hotels, glass-curtain buildings and shopping arcades after the promenade and the new world centre & hotel set foot at the skirt of tst and brightened up the area.
last week i was visiting the area and having some leisure moments. i started drawn by all these buildings around and fascinated by the similarities and differences, and the bountiful 80s flavour. here is houston centre shopping arcade. first of all, the name. building name today goes more exotic or even out of context. but back then, adopting a name in english and choosing a place in the us was cool. well, now “centre” is already an outdated word.
the most outstanding from this facade of course is the font of the building name. (if you know the name of the font, please let me know. thanks.)
houston centre was first opened in 1981.
