old walk-ups have many wonders. quite often you see chinese characters “written” on the façade, like this one. they usually are the signage of the particular flats. this one says “chinese social club” written by yu shiu kee.

only one piece of info is found online related to this club and mr yu, which is mr yu used to be a commissioner of the club.

next question, who is yu shiu-kee?

glad that i made the effort of digging into this. it turns out that mr yu was a respected businessman. he was the founder of yu kwen yik, a local chili sauce producer. yu kwen yik chili sauce is well-loved by local food-lovers and restaurants. its flavor is unique and to me the colour and constituency of the sauce is lovely too. mr yu opened his own shop and factory in the 1950s. his base was always at sai ying pun. the business is now run by the third generation of the yu family.
