here’s a common and pathetic scene in hong kong. old (walk-up) buildings at prime location are left vacant, as developers are trying to buy over the remaining few or deciding what, how and when best to tear down the property for redevelopment.
kut cheong mansion is actually consists of four eight-storeys high walk-up buildings. ground floor are commercial spaces. there were chinese bakeries, café, shops, chinese restaurant. this neighbourhood used to be busy and glorious in the last century as there were many industrial buildings around along with the residential area. I used to be a frequent visitor around here, as I took a summer job at ming pao daily news when it was based in north point, in an industrial building opposite kut cheong on the other side of the king’s road. kut cheong coffeeshop was where we got our afternoon fix then.
