請原諒我這個愚魯的港島人。啟德 – 一直只知道有個機場。
forgive me being a dumb hongkong islander. the only thing i knew about kai tak was the airport, throughout my life till lately.
i paid a visit to the academy of visual arts, baptist university last month, as it was originally the ex-royal air force station, one of the venues under the government’s heritage visit programme lasting for a whole month in october. the campus is also known as the kai tak campus. after touring around the 80-year old site, i took a walk in the neighbouring area. and then research where i been to afterwards. then i began to know more about kai tak, its history and more.
when people talk about kai tak these days, they most likely are thinking about the same area where the airport was at. what they talk about now is future development and the cruise terminal. the places i visited that day in october however are the less prominent, more quiet and feel faded corners.
checking map, i could imagine during its prime time, kai tak mansion must have its glorious moments. there are four blocks altogether, lining up tight and neat facing kwun tong road. in addition to residential apartments, there are shop spaces and car park. it was built in 1963 ( yes it is 50 years old). in the past few years, most of the units are bought over for redevelopment. however the plan is stalled off due to complications. now when you walk past the blocks, the vacancy and idleness feels torn.
