thanks to the one-month long heritage fiesta in october, i have had a guided tour in the campus of scad, at the site formerly north kowloon magistracy.
the magistracy was closed in 2005 after a service of 44 years. it was built in the 60s in neo classical style. not many people i guess have paid attention to its beauty when it was a public servant; and not that many more after. but i am glad to find the new tenant respects and has paid an effort in complementing the aesthetic and historic values long hidden. i have to admit i detest the idea and the term ‘revitalization’ used in hong kong. it usually means destroying the original purpose and meaning of the heritage before adding something artificial on top. this site i visited lately however gave me a new dimension.
the floor and stairway are shinning warmth of pink and the irregular arrangement is quite handsome . it seems a reflection of the inner light finally shines through after ages of dirt being removed.
