this is a fading retail format. one shop space accommodating stalls selling fresh meat, vegetable and seafood. one can still find them surviving in certain corners in some old districts.
this one is in sai ying pun, named fu wah. it is at the corner of water street crosses queen’s road west.
facing queen’s road west is a meat stall attended by an ‘auntie’. we usually picture big guy or uncle hosting a meat stall; so i always pay a silent salute to this lady every time passing by the stall. the veggie stall is situated at the corner of the shop, while the fish monger is on the other end. i also pay attention a bit to the fish monger because he is relatively young-looking. he somehow assures me that this stall and shop will survive longer. yet at the same time i worry for him and this shop, because the whole district is a property hot spot. who knows when the landlord will ask for sky-high increase in the rent or simply shut down the shop for redevelopment.
