“驚蟄 king tze” is one of the solar terms according to lunar calendar, literally means awakening of insects, signaling the warm season is coming soon. the highlight of this ‘season’ is to hit the villain. this old folk custom has been reviving in hong kong. one reason is that an international magazine has reported about it as, roughly, one of the unusual customs two three years back.
it is indeed animating and exhilarating. there are props, colours, and action. paper tigers and worship paper wares, elder women vigorously using sandals to hit the paper villain, and greasy pork strip to smear the paper tigers, rice scattering.
