‘ 辦館 ban kwun’ like ‘ 士多 si doll (store)’ are local corner stores, grocery shops, owned and operated by independent grocers, usually living in the neighbourhood. ‘ban kwun’ however sell ‘higher end’ goods such as wine and spirits.
both ‘ban kwun’ and store are about human touch and bond, concordance and geniality of the neighbourhood. unfortunately just like many hong kong natives and heritages, their presence and value are fading in great speed (don’t want to use the term dying).
i felt lucky, spotted this ‘ban kwun’, while strolling around north point two days ago; finding a surviving ban kwun for one, also because the name of the shop is auspicious – 幸福 means blissful and happiness.
